Traditional Antibiotics
Antibiotics are strong medicines that can cure many bacterial
illnesses and infections. The standard definition states
that an antibiotic is a substance produced by microorganisms
or synthetic chemical compounds that kill or inhibit other
microorganisms.
Antimicrobial Resistance
Shortly after the discovery and widespread introduction
of antibiotics into medical practice 50 years ago, scientists
observed that bacteria could develop resistance to them.
The more antibiotics are used, the more rapidly resistance
develops. When such resistance develops, the antibiotic
no longer stops bacterial growth, and thus, the antibiotic
is no longer capable of treating or curing the disease.
Traditional antibiotics have their place, but they are often
prescribed excessively and this has led to a much more serious
and dangerous health crisis. According to the World Health
Organization June 2000 report: US and Canadian doctors are
estimated to over-prescribe antibiotics by 50%.
The Natural Alternative
We can return to our natural resources to destroy the enormous
number of infectious diseases including those that are now
resistant to antibiotics. Current antibiotics are not always
reliable and are often responsible for complicating the
sickness. Side affects may be numerous and sometimes severe
and lead to a host of new problems that may require additional
treatment.
